AVEVA Supports Industrial Customers in Accelerating Climate Targets
Written by Peter Herweck, Chief Executive Officer, AVEVA
Climate change is the defining global issue of our time and forward-thinking industrial organizations are recognizing that taking climate action is the best way to accelerate the drive to a low carbon future. As a leading industrial technology company, focused on driving digital transformation for industries worldwide, AVEVA is playing a key role in fast-tracking innovative industrial solutions that will support its customers and stakeholders in the journey towards a zero-carbon economy.
Our focused goal at AVEVA is to align to the highest level of ambition for climate targets, under the Paris Agreement, as well as work with our customers and partners in leading by example on climate action. In June 2021, we announced our commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our operations by 2030 and have more recently further committed to net zero emissions across our value chain no later than 2050 by joining the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign, a global campaign which aims to mobilize a coalition of leading net zero initiatives in which participants now cover nearly 25% of global CO2 emissions and over 50% of GDP.
At AVEVA, we have the expertise, the network and the capabilities to realize the sustainable industries of the future. We recognize that technology has a core part to play –and we take our responsibility seriously. That’s why we are focused on extending our capabilities, to offer our customers more and are working with industrial organizations so that they can take the lead on climate change by embedding sustainability metrics into their systems as well as utilize artificial intelligence models to determine where sustainability adjustments can yield the greatest impact. Today AVEVA software is helping to deliver:
- Savings of 15-30% in energy costs & reduced CO2 emissions of 9-15%, cutting downtime by 25%
- Savings of up to 15% in total installed cost and up to 30% in design costs
- Faster, smarter feedstock decisions (from 2 days to 2 hours) for improved climate impact & less downtime
Working with our customers to increase productivity, which is fueling energy efficiency
With solutions that span engineering and operations, AVEVA is working with customers to increase energy efficiency, minimize noxious emissions and optimize the effective use of valuable natural resources. Our software has been driving sustainable outcomes for customers for years, while helping increase energy efficiency, reduce waste, boost circularity throughout engineering and operations, and maximize sustainable performance.
As a pioneer in sustainability, Laundry & Home Care leader with a diverse portfolio of well-known brands, Henkel has worked with AVEVA, to deploy a digital backbone that will help manage its sustainability and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) performance. When AVEVA™ Manufacturing Execution System (MES) was introduced in 2013, Henkel had a normal run-rate of 3% energy efficiency savings on every ton of product produced. After they installed the AVEVA system, energy efficiency increased creating savings of €8 million per year after only six years into the program. Henkel spent around €8-10 million on the system, so the return on investment over time was excellent, and today they are using the system to generate many other efficiency gains throughout their operations.
TechnipFMC is a leading technology provider to the traditional and new energies industry which is delivering fully integrated projects, products, and services. AVEVA software is supporting its energy transition vision and we are working with them on a range of sustainable implementations including green hydrogen and other global projects. As an example of how our technology is driving sustainability is the AVEVA Dynamic Simulation software which ran a dynamic flare header simulation that reduced the size and volume of steel needed in the headers by 34%. This saved €20 million and boosted operational efficiency while minimizing the use of carbon-intensive resources and risking no compromise to safety performance.
Finland based Neste, the world’s largest producer of biodiesel, is helping transportation, aviation together with polymer and chemical industries to make their business more sustainable with a wide range of renewable products. With a goal to drive digital innovation for sustainable outcomes throughout their business and attain carbon neutrality by 2035, they have deployed AVEVA Unified Supply Chain in the cloud, which is enabling the team to use data intelligence and analytics to make fast decisions from anywhere. As a result, production can be optimized automatically, and model building, decision-support and production planning all takes in one digital platform shared between over 80 sites, increasing efficiency, and further enabling Neste to drive operational efficiency by supporting smooth collaboration. In total, decision time has been cut and Neste can meet its targets more efficiently.
Supporting the Development of Low-Carbon Industrial Technologies
With our customers everchanging needs always at forefront of our business strategy, we recognize the role of emerging technologies like big data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analytics in driving innovation and supporting low carbon technologies. We also have an extensive global research program both in-house and are working with academic institutions and strategic customers around the world to build software that can support renewable technologies, carbon capture and storage, and innovations such as process simulation technology to advance the global hydrogen economy.
