AVEVA publishes first Sustainability Report further affirming our commitment to a accelerate a sustainable future
A Rallying Call for Corporate Collaboration –The Private Sector Must Act Now on Climate Change
Written by Lisa Johnston, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer, AVEVA
Following discussions at COP26 over the last two weeks, the world has recognized that cutting global carbon emissions in the next nine years by 50% is essential to controlling the climate emergency. This is equivalent to a decarbonization rate of 11.7% ¹ – more than double the current rate. This is a generational challenge – and business must play its part.
At AVEVA, we are committed to leading sustainable innovation to address these priorities and our recent AVEVA Sustainability Report affirmed our commitment to accelerating our software’s capabilities to advance net-zero industries, advancing gender equality and equity in the workplace, while exemplifying sustainable and ethical business practices within our own operations.

How industrial software and a data-centric approach facilitate the net-zero economy
We are proud to be collaborating with our customers to optimize sustainable outcomes for decades, with AVEVA’s software solutions helping digitalize and transform energy efficiency, circularity, traceability and resilience.
We are proud to support the development of new transition technologies. Here, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies have a key role to play in the transition to a net-zero carbon emissions world. We are working with Aker Carbon Capture, a leading carbon capture technology provider, to help mitigate the environmental impact of industry. AVEVA’s Unified Engineering in the cloud helps Aker Solutions create efficient and repeatable designs for productized carbon capture units, allowing teams to collaborate across time zones, resulting in an increase in operational efficiency and time to market by over 50%.
In addition to mitigation technologies, all sectors of the economy must learn to operate differently. The University of California at Davis, was one of the first major universities to pledge carbon neutrality by 2025. AVEVA System Platform and AVEVA’s PI System have played a critical role in supporting these ambitious goals across 1000+ buildings on campus. The University has used AVEVA’s software to optimize energy use and equipment performance, resulting in a 62% reduction in campus gas use and a savings of more than $13M since 2009. The university also shares data stored in its PI System with students and faculty to use in courses and projects, including providing real-world data sets to engineering and environmentalism students.
Collaborating to create positive change
Recognizing the importance of collaboration in building a net-zero world, I recently joined fellow sustainability leaders from Microsoft, Schneider Electric, Neste and Ørsted in a roundtable discussion at our AVEVA PI World virtual event. During our session, we discussed our collective sustainability-focused priorities and the significance of digitalization in driving net-zero efforts. We learned how our partners are collaborating with AVEVA to optimize sustainable operations, enhance safety and efficiency and minimize emissions through a combination of AI-based analytics and contextual information.
In helping to build collective resilience and increase climate ambition, we were also excited to join our partners Schneider Electric, Wood group and Microsoft as well as many of our peers, during the recent COP26 event in Glasgow. We welcome the opportunity to team up with fellow industry innovators to tackle the climate crisis together, and to help advance collaboration between businesses, governments and civil society.
The commitment to a more sustainable and just future is one many of us share. More than ever, businesses need to play our part in the active work to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. I look forward to continuing to challenge ourselves and our peers to go further, operationalizing our own gender equality and equity ambitions and remaining at the forefront of innovation to help shape the sustainable industries of the future.
